Buckeye Draft Update

So how did the buckeyes do in this weekend's Draft? A.J. Hawk went 5th as expected to the Green Bay Packers, the last time a linebacker went that high was 10 years ago (AJ pictured at right walking down the tunnel at Lambeu with his Fiance Laura Qinn). Donte Whitner was the next one taken... surprisingly at the 8th spot. Many draft experts graded Donte as late first round / early second, but the Bills thought otherwise. Bobby Carpenter went 10 picks later at 18 to the Dallas Cowboys.

Perhaps the best move of the day was Pittsburgh trading up to get Santonio Holmes at 25. Looks like Ben Rothelsburger will have another target to throw to when beating up on the Bengals and Browns. Nick Mangold was the fifth and final Buckeye taken in the first round as the N.Y. Jets selected him with the 29th pick. Ohio State had the most first round draft picks this year with five, that's one off from Miami's record of 6 (If I heard that right).

Other Buckeyes chosen in later rounds included Ashton Youboty (Buffalo), Anthony Schelgel (NY Jets), "Nasty Nate" Salley (Carolina), and Rob Sims (Seattle). Unfortunately Mike Kudla, who set an NFL combine record for bench press (225lbs 45 times) went undrafted and has yet to sign a free agent contract. Other players that went undrafted, but signed as free agents include... Josh Huston (Chicago), Ryan Hamby (Cincinnati), Marcus Green (NY Giants), and E.J. Underwood, who played for Pikeville (Ky.) College last season (NY Giants).

Note: I haven't talked to Ed since Friday, so I'm not sure if he survived the draft party.
