First, the good news: Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle fame formed the new band Ashes Divide and released a new album. Click the title to hear the first single - the album as a whole is pretty solid - similar to A Perfect Circle, but with Howerdel on vocals instead of Maynard. They're gonna be playing Crew Stadium with the Rock on the Range tour on March 17th-18th (they play on the 17th) along with: Kid Rock, 3 Doors Down, Disturbed, Staind, Papa Roach, Seether, Serj Tankian, Flyleaf, Shinedown, Killswitch Engage, Finger Eleven, Alter Bridge, Filter, Theory of a Dead Man, Sevendust, Default, 10 Years, Bobaflex, Red, Airbourne, Black Tide, Revelation Theory, Drive A, and more. I could be talked into going to this.On the bad news front, if you haven't heard, 99.7 The Blitz is now 99.7 "The Rock." The end of an era. Their first five songs:

Now, nevermind that there are *two* songs titled "Photograph" in their first five, I know Jim *loves* Nickleback (even if they do steal their song titles from Def Leopard) and Eddie *loves* Bush (especially the songs with no drums), but Def Leopard?? Before I started my 99.7 "The Rock" boycott, I heard lots of AC/DC and Van Halen too. I think their new theme is: "99.7 The Rock, playing the most played out classic rock, the most played out 90s rock, and only the most mainstream pop-rock from this decade: Don't worry, you'll never hear a song you haven't already heard 100 times." No word on what Mark the Shark thinks about this whole ordeal.
I'm not even sure Mark The Shark is a fan of music made after 1972 (ala Ed).
ReplyDeleteAlso 99.7 has been on a steady decline in my opinion... and this latest format change does nothing to set them apart.
There's another station (106.7 maybe) that has limited commercials and plays somewhat similar music, but less rock. I hear a lot of people at work touting the awesomeness of this station.
To tell the truth I really only listen to 90.5 WCBE on my commute to work. I get my NPR news in the morning and all things considered on the drive home.
On the weekends I get old-timey radio like a prairie-home companion, and super sweet techno-beats from all mixed up.
Other than that I listen to a fair number of pod-casts and mp3 cd's. Discovering new music can be hard though... for that I've got MTV and iTunes.
A friend from work is going to bonaroo this year... concerts are probably the best way to find new bands.

KBPI in Denver is what the station should be, If I know what you like. Any Metallica, any time. Same with tool and SOD. This was the only thing I enjoyed about denver. "The rock" sounds like it will be our 101.1 here, which is unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteThe Blitz aka the Rock, like 96.3 and 97.9, must be operated by people that graduated between '81 and '92. The really think that shit is sweet. If a new resident of the planet searched the airwaves in Columbus, they might think Rush and AC/DC are Gods, and Pink Floyd, The Who, and Stevie Ray Vaughan only did four songs each.
