Anyone ever use Microsoft's answer to google maps? I still prefer google cause their search results seem more reliable, however Microsoft has shelled out the big bucks for some really cool aerial photography which they call the "birds eye view". Essentially they've got imagery taken at an angle in each direction (North, South, East, and West) of major cities throughout the US. Take a look at these screen caps of Ohio Stadium... Impressive!

ReplyDeleteDid you know you can stream these map tiles/aerials into ArcView? You need a piece of kit called Arc2Earth, which can also convert any *.mxd's into KML files for distribution to clients. It's only about $100 - but be warned the coyright rules for the microsoft imagery still belong to microsoft so, as i understand it, we can only use their images for internal use and cannot include them in a map that is going out the door to a client.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I've got a KML export tool... and apparently 9.2 is supposed to support native KML export. I'll have to take a look.
ReplyDeleteTotally random... but the latest URISA newsletter has an article about open source GIS options... sounds like a good option for really old / crappy hardware that can't handle ArcGIS.
