As far as I'm concerned the two most marquee elements of the Derby are Women wearing crazy old-school / big ass hats and mint juleps. The big ass hat tradition seems to be a hold over from a simpler time when women were relegated to "object" status and men were "true citizens".
I thought it might be neat to throw a Derby party this Saturday, but Traci reminded me that Friday is Cinco De Mayo (back to back drinking holidays are a no no). Anyway if you or anyone else is going to throw a Derby party, here's a Mint Julep recipe.
Mint Julep
This recipe is adapted from Southern Living Magazine.
- A 10-ounce glass filled with crushed ice
- 4 fresh mint leaves
- 2 tablespoons mint simple syrup (recipe below)
- 2 ounces Kentucky Bourbon
- 1 small cocktail straw to stir drink
Mint Simple Syrup
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups sugar
- 8 sprigs of fresh mint
Place 8 sprigs of mint in an airtight, plastic container, and pour the sugar-and-water mixture over the mint. Refrigerate.

Just for the record, I didn't say anything about back to back drinking holidays...why not?! But our house is just under construction a bit, so I thought we could wait for a couple weeks to have a spring/summer party. If anyone else wants to throw a Derby Party, that would be cool. I have no problem with wearing big ass hats!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting...a blog first....a domestic scuffle...:)
ReplyDeleteOn the mint julep bit - there is a $1000 mint julep being offered this year that I read about a few weeks ago: http://www.kfor.com/Global/story.asp?S=4756061
ReplyDeleteAs for the party, I can confirm that the inner portion of the track is the place to be. Some of my girlfriends went down a few years ago and said it was a huge get drunk/get high event. But, supposedly alcohol is not allowed inside the track so they smuggled in booze in zip lock bags stuffed inside their bras - which apparently was the thing to do.
