Big Nerd Update

The electronics entertainment expo is underway in Los Angeles. This is typically the "biggest week" in video game news and this year is no exception. I've been real busy at work so I haven't had time to put much together on this... just a couple of pics and some links (a three part post may be in the works).

First, Sony announced the pricing of the PS3 and revealed the final specs on their controller. They're releasing two versions, one with a 20 gig hard drive, and one with a a 60 gig hard drive, WiFi, SD/CF/MemorySick Reader, and HDMI video out. Start saving now cause on November 17th you'll be able to pick them up for $499 & $599. Also it's important to note that they're planning a world wide launch (with the same price in euros).

The finalized controller is essentially a blue-tooth version of the current dual shock. However, it has X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw and lateral motion detection (so it knows how your tilting, twisting, caressing the controller)... this is blatantly ripped from Nintendo.

Engadget live blogged Sony's Press conferences... click here for in-depth coverage. Also here's a link to some high-res promo shots.

The other big news came from Nintendo who renamed their "Revolution" console the Wii. Nintendo isn't trying to win the next-gen "Arms Race". Their console forgoes a lot of the new wiz-bang graphics and sound technology but brings in their new controller design which seems very promising. Their controller is a more dramatic departure from past deigns, it knows how far away you are from the screen (demos show how you can make stabbing motions). They demo-ed a four player tennis match where your actually moving the remote like the handle of a racket (adding spin and everything). Oh yea, the controller also has a built in speaker (nintendo is great at adding little touches like this. Anyhoo this was ment to be brief... follow the links if you want more info.

  1. Isnt this post a bit too long for the "keep it short" rule?

  2. I've tried to figure out a way to automagically split up posts so only the first 250 words show up on the main page but it will mess up the way we show/hide the comments. This one clocked in at 329 words so yea its long. One of the most common comments I hear from people are "I don't ready anything more than a paragraph"... so I'm just trying to oblige.

More importantly, is anyone out there considering getting one of these when it comes out? Are we getting to old for video games? I've said it before... in the last six months I've read more about video games than actually played them.

This thing does have great potential to be a media center... with 60 gigs you can store a bunch of music and probably stream tv shows as well. The nintendo console seems like it offers more in terms of fun and unique game play (four player mario cart never gets old).

  3. I'm with you... it's interesting to see the evolution. I used to have tons of time to play video games, and no cash to purchase them. Now its the exact opposite.
