Betamax vs VHS

Intel and Microsoft have said they will support Toshiba-led next generation DVD technology, HD DVD, over a rival Sony-led Blu-ray DVD technology.
Toshiba, with NEC, Sanyo and others, is pushing HD DVD, while backers of Sony's Blu-ray discs include Dell and Apple.

  1. Here's an engadget summary of the war as well. Blu-Ray has higher capacity, but will be more expensive early on. Just based on the higher capacity it seems like a more "Next-Gen" friendly format, with more high-def content and bigger badder videogames / computer & data needs down the line. Also the PS3 is scheduled to ship in spring/summer of 06 with a blu-ray drive. In all likelihood drive manufacturers will end up making dual format drives (kinda like after a couple of years you could get DVD- and DVD+ combo drives). Anyhoo, we must consume!
