Look Out ESRI

Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) is the microsoft of GIS... their the top dawgs in GIS software and in turn everyone use's their file formats and forms of analysis. Overall they have some good stuff. However, google just launched google earth. Now I'm sure google's software isn't as robust as ArcGIS and doesn't really support a wide variety of data types. However, there are a ton of small businesses and people that could benefit from a "light-weight" GIS that is easy to use and requires little training. Anyway, the basic version of their software is free... I'll probably check it out once I get home tonight but it looks like google is getting more serious... pumping out more "information" management software... maybe that helps explain their high stock price. Brit boy, check this out and see if it's useful. I could see setting up your own photo-map journals with this fairly easily... with links to flickr of course.

  1. We used a similar product in Iraq, you can actually do fly-throughs to see what it's like going down certain roads... pretty sweet. Classified versions aren't much better.

  3. It's nothing more than a mapping service and the resolution is shitty. Nothing to get exciteed about E-lo.

  4. I set it up last night, and its cool considering it's free. I haven't really explored any other functionality like exporting or "spatial queries"... when you turn on buildings and go to a major US city you can get some simple 3d renderings.

  5. it is pretty sweet considering it's free... the military/national agencies do have much better resolution but it's wicked expensive and hard to come by. Also, the building and things, the imagery is draped over... so they look like buildings. I've seen some applications that can even show cars on the road in 3d...
