Meet Boris

Ok - here is my first attempt at a Lobao-inspired movie.. Boris is 23, one of 23 children, from Togo, and doing everything he can to get to England, Australia, or some other English speaking country so he can study English full time.. it's a long, long story - but the gist of it is - things are very much up in the air. He came to China because it's easier to get visas here than it is in Togo - after a lot of ups and downs - his brother is finally here to (hopefully) get the visa stuff figured out.. the clock is ticking..

I think most of it will make sense, but by way of background, the first area is Tiananmen/the Forbidden City (where people were jumping at the chance to get a picture with him). The first restaurant section is me, Boris, a guy from Morocco, and a girl from the Congo - it's mostly in French - but they just told Boris what he had been doing with his chopsticks (hitting them against his plate) means "I'll kill you" in Chinese.. he had no idea.. and they told him there was probably a big group of Chinese guys waiting for him outside the restaurant. The second restaurant scene is the restaurant across from my apartment that we eat at every day. Enjoy!

  1. Very cool!!! Boris seems like a very friendly guy... great laugh. I guess with 22 other siblings you've got to have a sense of humor.

What's up with the pictures at tianamen? Did they think he was a celebrity or something? Does that ever happen to you? Also were the cops scoping you guys out in one of the scenes?

If you had a crazy new HD camera you could make this much more artsy... although your hard drive would be filled to capacity.

Anyway, it's good to see you enjoying yourself and spreading the G-town love around the world!!

    Two other observations

    1) I need to leave the country for bit... been too long.
    2) Youtube / the internet is bad ass!!

  3. So that place where you eat lunch every day looked like you each had a 3 course meal. Probably cost like $2 right? The Toxic Hell (Taco Bell) that I am eating right now cost me about $7. Where's the justice?

Ka, I thought you'd get a kick out of the Crawl T-Shirt.. I like walking around with a big picture of Ohio on my chest. It makes it easier to answer when someone asks: "Where are you come from?" I met those guys at the dinner through Couch Surfing too.

That restaurant is great - it's cheap - and totally a local flavor place - no English menus - four or five people who work there all day, every day, seven days a week, and the average dish is about $1.25 or so.

Boris is a bit of a local celebrity - even though he only speaks about five words of Chinese (rice, hello, goodbye, thank you, and "beautiful girl" - which he says to everyone). I told him people wanted to get their picture taken with him because they thought he was Barack Obama..
