Ubiquitous WiFi

The entire San Diego Convention Center has a solid WiFi connection... where ever you are you can whip out your lap top and do some "work". Right now I'm in the middle of the vendor booth section. If you want to check out some other pics from the UC take a look at flickr pics tagged with ESRI.

Today the technical presentation kicked off, and I learned a little info on the upcoming terrain data set... it's essentially like having pyramids but for elevation data instead of imagery. Another interesting thing to note is the impact of google earth. You really get the sense that ESRI was caught by surprise at the success and popularity of google earth. They've since released their ArcExplorer which is really similar but adds more spatial analytical tools. Also it can be used as a client to view / interact with spatial data you publish on your own... like a bigger, badder ArcIMS site... oh yea and they've apparently removed all the bugs and improved stability in 9.2 (we'll see).

Alright enough propaganda... got to eat dinner and drink beer.

So...? what IS new in 9.2? The stability of 9.1 is poor so anyhting is an improvement in that region.
Google Earth is becoming my new best friend. I've found free tools to import/export *.kml files into AV9.1 and so have begun using it to allow others, without AV, to access data. Plus, with the pro liscense you can export high quality Aerials.

Finally, while on my jolly in the Canada i'm thinking of trying to contact some Toronto based GIS companies (before i leave) to see if they'd meet me and discuss their sance on hiring foreigners (with a visa!)....thoughts on this? anyone know anythign about immigrating to Canada?

  2. The stability was their main focus, along with useability. It sounds simple but now you can use the keyboard short cuts outside of an edit session and with any tool. So you don't have to switch back and forth between a bunch of different tools just to navigate and select stuff. Also they'll be bringing out the file-based geodatabase... no-more relience on access which means faster performance.

As far as the Canada thing... I have no idea... I would think it may be easier since they don't have a department of homeland security, however they may be more protective of their "local jobs/economy".
