Some of you may be aware that I've joined a video game version of netflicks, gamefly.com. I can check out one game at a time and keep it for as long as I want, then mail it back and get a new one from my que. I've heard about this game Rez for a long time, it's often referred to as a "must play" and its kinda hard to find (even though its 4 years old it still sells for $50 on ebay)... I finally got it a couple of weeks ago.
The game is essentially a "rail shooter" meaning your character stays on a set path and you "shoot" at the other flying objects around you. The game is crazy amaizing. It's a audio visual overload. First it uses vector graphics ala old school games and your character and the enemies you fight are strange and abstract.
Perhaps the best part of the game is the way it works with the music. Each level's music and sound effects were created by different DJ's which closely follow your actions. So it becomes more than a shooter, it's like a rhythm, light, freak out, galaga. Anyway check out this gameplay video and see if you can wrap your head around the game play (turning the music up is a must).
Note: The premise is your hacking into a computer and your fighting computer's security program. Your body is abstract and you take on different forms when you gain or loose power. Finally the little square is your targeting reticule.
If I get some time this weekend maybe we can play this on Jim's projector and all have an epileptic seizure together!
