Gamer Showdown

It looks like Microsoft is getting a boner at the thought of Sony delaying the PS3. I personally like the Sony platform better than X-Box or GameCube. I'm sure Erick has a little more insight than I do but I have a gut feeling that Sony has a little more riding on the success of the PS3 than just the happiness of the gaming market. Not only would successful sales inject millions of BluRay players into households around the world but it would surely help the finances of the struggling electronics giant. It seems that the computer/gaming aspect of the company is the most successful of the group. They don't seem to have as much of the TV market as they used to. I remember when the Trinitron and XBR were the top shit in boobtubes. How many of us had a discman or walkman at one point? Now we have mp3 players made by companies we had never heard of two years ago(iPod being the exception). What up Sony? I still love you!

Discerning public...? Your thoughts?

  1. There's been a lot of speculation about PS3 for the past few Months... Sony kept saying they were going to release the PS3 in "Spring of 06". While the delay to November was widely expected, sony was very tightlipped which angered a lot of people following closely.

Sony has a lot riding on the PS3, like you've said the playstation brand is essentially its most profitable. Apple has something like 80% of the mp3 player market share and the flat screen market is getting more and more competitive.

Some specs... It's been confirmed that the PS3 will ship with a 60gig hard drive, and linux installed (probably with highly customized User Interface). They also announced their "Playstation Network Platform" (i.e. x-box live) which will support internet browsing, micro-payments, along with voice and video chat.

So here's the deal (my opinion)... Sony wants the PS3 to be their "I-pod". More specifically they want you to purchase & download sony's catalog of movies, music, videogames using your PS3 (don't forget blu-ray movies). Then if you want to take that content on the go... you buy a PSP. The PS3 is not just about video-games... it can stream audio/video off your PC.

A lot of people think the x-box now has a great chance of winning the next console war... but they often forget about the brand loyalty... I know I'd enjoy an xbox 360 (I have the money to buy one), but everyone I talk to says "I'm waiting for PS3".

In reality, I probably won't get a new console... at least until I get an HD-tv and surround sound... CONSUME!!!

  2. One more thought... over the last 9 months I've read more about video games than I've actually played video games.
