Spatial Data Explosion

I've been storing up a couple of "spatial" posts for a few weeks now and here's the first episode. This first post should appeal to the history buffs out there.

First check out this Library of congress flash presentation of WWII Military Situation maps. This set of 11 maps shows troop positions and movements over four weeks as the US fought throughout the Ardene's forest and eventually took the city of Bastogne. The animation is a kinda hard to make out but you can definitely make out the ebb and flow of the battle. Also you can zoom in on individual maps to get more details... its interesting to see a German box representing troops with a 15 and a question mark next to it... this is legit band of brothers stuff.

The Library of Congress also has scanned their archives of panoramic maps of US cities. I've got the Columbus one on my wall at work... it's interesting to see what types of features they depict in the legend (churches were very important).

More modern info to follow in part II...
