My ears are still ringing from the gigg I was at last night, where I was confronted by a musical amassing of not one, not even two, but three quality bands. The headline act - and the reason I bought the tickets - was to see The Go Team with their hyped-up retro soul fuelled beats. They were great and rocked the crowd into a frenzy. My toes hurt.
However, what made the night so great was that both support bands were fucking sweet! It's been a long time since i went to a gigg where I was as pleased listening to them as much as the headline act (last time was Ocean Colour Scene circa 1997 who supported a way too drunk Oasis at Whitely Bay Ice Rink - ahhh, happy days!). Anyway, first up were Smoosh who are a Seattle sister duo who make exceedingly endearing, piano/synth-based indie pop and have shared the stage with Death Cab for Cutie, The Presidents of the United States of America, Cat Power and Sleater-Kinney. Oh… and they’re 10 and 12 years old.
After those kids were packed off to bed came The Grates sounding for all intents and purposes like a carbon copy of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - my opinion: If it ain't broke don't fuck with a winning sound! The lead singer and drummer are both very fun to watch and all their songs sounded great!
Andy out....
Nice work. You're right I don't remember too many great opening bands... after a while I stopped making it to shows to see opening bands.
ReplyDeleteThe best series of openers I've seen had to be that night at the Al Rosa Villa, the first band was a local death-metal band who sucked... but after that we saw a smaller detroit rock band that kicked as (they covered the Saftey Dance). Then we had our first introduction to Seven Dust (they blew the place up). Finally coal chamber impressed as well... what a night... I need to go to a concert soon.
Don't forget the night we saw Corn for the first time at the Newport - they were opening for... Megadeth, I think. They opened with Blind, Jonathan Davis walked out in a sequined Adidas jump suit, and all hell broke loose. Talk about upstaging. I think we saw Limp Biscuit open for someone there too.. they were pretty annoying even then.
ReplyDeleteI'm not 100% sure I was at that show... did megadeth play their twice? Ok its coming back to me... the megadeth fans were more "old school": read acid wash jeans, long hair, more jean jackets... Korn fans had more piercings... both were hard asses in the pit.
