Geordie fans had waited with baited breath for much of the seaon for Shearer to clear the air regarding his tyneside future. Shearer has strongley resisted calls from England to ressurrect his prolific international career, showing he is not a man who changes his mind easily, once made up. A glimmer of light was given this month by Newcastle Chairman Freddy Shepherd who was quoted in the Daily Mirror in early March as saying:
"He has said he will quit but, listen, I said I loved my wife when I left her this morning. Wait until tomorrow morning. Things change."
