one more mozilla advantage: open source lisence. People are writing all sorts of nice additions to the browser because they want the feature added. This one links me directly to OLGA for guitar tablature... I also have the urban dictionary, dictionary.com wikipedia, amazon, and ebay. Look How COOL I am! (Common Ed I'm asking for a retaliatory LeBron Post Here its been a while... tell me why the browns are gonna win it all this year!)
Oh yea, don't forget you can always link back to an old story in the archives (a year of blogging left some interesting stuff on some web server in cyberspace).

What if no one went pro?
Here's a good story from ESPN page2 that theorizes what college basketball would be like if it wasn't just a stopping point for NBA talent. Everyone loves a great 'what if scenario' and there are a ton of them in this story. Check out the description of Akron's line up... (Lebron James and four other guys). I didn't realize Adre Iguodala left Arizona early, and what if Duke still had Luol Deng, UCONN still had Emeka, GT had Chris Bosh, Syracuse had Melo? The way it plays out in the article LBJ takes Akron all the way! Anyway link here.

March Madness
What a great weekend for college basketball. All of the regional final games were incredible. Three of them went to overtime and all were decided by 8 points or less. I had no problem just sitting back, watching basketball and rooting for the big ten all weekend long. Illinois' come back was simply ridiculous... when they were down by 12 with something like 4 minutes to go I said to my self "It's time for Reggie to come off of the bench... and or call Digger Phelps and Notre Dame". Darren Williams is a baller and Luther Head keeps it real! Louisville almost got 'Pittsnogled' too... that game was filled with three pointers. (How about those PSP commercials!?!?)
Going into the final-4 Brad has a two point lead in the G-town bracket picks. If I have to pick a team to win it all out of this final 4 I guess I'd go with UNC. They've just got a ton of NBA talent at every position... and that doesn't necessarily mean they will win, just that they have the best chance.
Traci and I also watched Gunner Palace, which is showing at the Grandview Drexel. Pat posted this link a few weeks back and the movie is really good. The filmmakers spent two months with the 2/3 Field Artillery Division whose barracks are set up in one of Uday Hussein's bombed out palaces. The film gives you a look at daily life for the soldiers over there now that 'major combat' is over. If you can, take the time to see it... even though its just a movie it helps to put things in perspective (I felt lucky watching basketball considering soldiers have been in Iraq fighting this war for two years now).

O.k. Friday
Just thought I'd throw out the obligatory "IT'S FRIDAY!!!" post to see if anyone has any cool ideas or plans for tonight or the rest of the weekend. I've been able to shrug off Traci's request for a bowling night for the last couple of weeks... but unless something better comes along I might be staring down a 7-10 split later tonight. I'm planning on going offroading tomorrow, and hopefully I can recruit a co-pilot. Other than that I guess there's Easter stuff to do... like eating candy. Oh yea, there's more NCAA basketball as well.

It's the biggest Jeep they've produced since the old wagoneer. News and photo here (it looks like a bigger version of the old cherokee). More pics here... it's a monstrosity.

PSP released this thursday...
Sony's Playstation Portable will finally be released here in the US on Thursday. I posted some pictures of this slick piece of hardware some time last year. It's got a crazy high-rez, 16:9 aspect screen, wi-fi, mp3 and mpg4 play back support. I'd love to get one... but I'll probably wait for the first major price drop (I picture my self using it to blogg from stauf's). Anyway here's an article that discusses the impending US launch, and how perceived US demand has forced Sony to delay its' European Launch (US consumers want their PSPs!).

Bagby Hot Springs
Talk about buzz enhancement. I went to a natural hot springs last weekend. There are over 100 of them in the state. It was not easy to find. No two websites gave the same directions. It doesn't help that Oregon has a big problem marking its roads for directions and locations. If you've been here, you know what I'm talking about. It was a pretty killer two days to find it. Seriously, we went out for the whole saturday to look for it and we thought it was gonna be easy and close so we didn't even bring food or water. I'll give you 420 guesses to say what we didn't forget. So we came back Sat night, unsuccessful.
First thing Sunday morning I called the OU grads out here and we went back again. Success. The first thing you see on the "well maintined trail" is a missing bridge over a 20 ft wide rocky creek. Cold, yes. We made it though. We got to sit in 135 degree water that came from the volcanic earth we were sitting on. When I figure out how to put pics in here, I will. But go here...

A Little Message From John To The Fans
John would really like the fans to know that he would have loved to communicate with them more in the last months and also write much more about his albums for example, but due to the fast turnout of the solo albums there simply was not time. He is also practising guitar very intensively every day. However he will do so once he has more time and would "love to do another Q&A with the fans again, like we did last time, only this time more focused on the music perhpas and I would especially like to talk with people about the period of time when I was making this series of solo albums"
AND: Has he got news for you!:
Today John went into the studio with the Peppers to record the new Chilis album! he was very very enthusiastic about it and could not wait to delve into it heart & soul (..John Style!)
A boxed set whith all his solo works (including those just mentioned) is another idea he has been toying with for a while and hopes to realize once he has more time. And that's just some of many ideas! So for now John sends you his love and gratitude for all those who share his passion for the music.
(Published 16th March 2005. Summary source & direct quotes from a conversation with John on 15th March 2005/ the evening before entering the studio to record the new RHCP album)

Saturday Rant

Once again Im sitting at Staufs and getting into blog mode. First off wow what an NCAA tournament. Last night two of the top teams were upset as Bucknell beat Kansas and Vermont took out Syracuse (Its march madness baby!). After the opening round Joe is leading the gtown NCAA picks with 26 points. Im sure things will get more interesting over the next couple of days considering all of these upsets.
Anyway, the picture above is a work flow problems solving sheet, which you can use to cover your ass at work. There's some good info there.
Here are a few links to stuff I've been surfing to recently.
The Onion History: This is Onions front page for March 14th 1945. The Regan headline is good along with the First Caucasian to join Negro Baseball Leauge.
The Mars Volta: You might want to turn your speakers down a little for this one. The Mars Volta are a band made up of former At The Drive In members. They've got a jazz/latin/psychedelic rock thing going on. Traci is a big fan! We saw them live last October and they rocked.
Alex Grey: This guy was born in Columbus Ohio and went to CCAD in the mid 70s. Hes an artist who does incredible stuff, combining theology and mysticism to explore what it means to be human. (Having an open mind helps when viewing this site). Tool has used a lot of his stuff in their album art, on stage during concerts, and in their music video's. Check out the chapel and the sacred mirrors Sacred Mirrors (the flash version is cool).
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - This is being released two months from today May 19th. From what I hear this one should be filled with crazy light saber scenes. (for the record ms word knows that light saber is two words!)
The Zutons: I think they're from Liverpool. The point is theyve got a cool laid back eclectic rock sound that I highly recommend.
Seamless.USGS.gov: Your one stop shop for US spatial / geo-data theyre starting to release some high-res ortho/satellite images. Our tax dollars support this so check it out.

Hey Now!!!

St. Patty's day has passed and all we can do is look forward to next year. I updated the photo album with some pictures from Byrne's last night and a couple more that Joe submitted. If you guys have any pictures you want to add to the album just email them to me... Gorman I'm looking in your direction. I need some photographic evidence that you are alive and well in Alabama. I guess I should just give you a call. Anyway... be excellent to each other. (please excuse the self-absorbed photo post)

The comments system doesn't seem to work today... anyway I wish I was somewhere else right now... soaking in the NCAA glory. UW-Milwaukee is crushing Alabama right now, I wanted to pick that upset soooooo bad but I didn't, what else is new. No one else in our pool picked them to win so it don't matter.

If you have time this morning get your NCAA brackets set up. Look for the post a couple of days ago for the info you need. Right now we've got 4 people... three of them are going to be trounced by yours truly. Brit boy, you should give a shot... it always seems like the people who know the least about college basketball win these things. Anyhoo keep it Krunk and drink some green beer tonight.

Here's another St. Patrick's Day News story, where I got the picture from...

Tomorrow = Green Beer Day
Traci has kept me focused on St. Patrick’s day for the past couple of weeks. When ever she sees a green clothing item she says “that would be good for St. Patrick’s day.” Anyway I just thought I’d try to find out what everyone is doing. Excuse me if this seems culturally insensitive… but what kind of celebration happens over in England? I don’t even really know who St. Patrick was or what he accomplished. All I know is there will be a metric-as-load of people drinking until they fall over inside a tent erected on top of the Byrne’s parking lot (I’m planning on going there sometime after work ~7:30pm).
In other news here’s a link to one of the off-roading videos I promised a couple of weeks ago. The red jeep eventually makes it on top of that ‘shelf’ that it’s trying to tackle. These jeeps were tooling around the ‘staging area’ at the trailhead entrance.

Alright I've got a couple of sports articles to link to and a suggestion that we somehow do a gtown NCAA bracket competition. I could probably set it up on espn or yahoo or something tonight. If anyone has any suggestions let me know. The opening round starts Thursday so we'd have to get everyone to fill their bracket out by tomorrow night / early on Thursday.
In world soccer news, Enland will play the U.S. in Chicago on May 31. Anyone up for a trip to Chicago? Beckham and Own probably won't be there but we could see Wayne Rooney, Kieron Dyer, Sol Campbell, and Owen Hargreaves (no relation to Andy) go down in defeat on our own soil.
Oh yea, and in case you forgot... the Browns are looking at yet another 'rebuilding year'. Come on, can you honestly say with a straight face that "Trent Dilfer is a quality starting quarterback in the NFL." He never has been and he never will be. He won a super bowl with the Ravens by
a) handing the ball off to Jamal Lewis
b) being an average practice dummy for Ray Lewis and one of the greatest defense's the NFL has ever seen.
All of this may sound negative, but I'm still a Browns fan... for me its kinda like slowing down to see the aftermath of a car accident; you know it's going to be ugly, but you want to know if anyone walked away. Actually, now that Butch is gone and Romeo is onboard, hopefully we'll acquire some quality playas over time.

Madness
It's that time of the year again. When sitting on your couch and watching college basketball from sun-up to sun-down is completely acceptable. Tournament time is upon us, so bust out the brackets and try to pick some upsets. My pick to win it all is Illinois (close call over N.C.). They will be playing with purpose as their head coach's mother recently passed away. My sleeper pick is Pittsburgh. They play tough, Big East ball and have talent at every position. My super-sleeper is Ohio U. The Bobcats earned their first tournament appearance since '94, and will look to make the most of this rare opportunity.
Here's some interesting players to keep your eyes on as the tournament develops:
Patrick Sparks, Kentucky - A bluegrass baller who is quick to pull the trigger. If he is beyond half court he is in range. If the other Wildcat atheletes can give him open looks at the basket, he can quickly fill up a scoreboard.
Drew Lavender, Oklahoma - Standing only 5'6'', he utilizes quickness and great court vision. A former McDonald's All-American from Brookhaven, Lavender distributes the ball well and can be deadly from the perimeter.
Andrew Bogut, Utah - This 6'10" Aussie may be the most dominant player in college basketball. He averages a double-double and should be a legitimate force in the NBA next year. Look for Bogut to carry his team to at least the sweet sixteen.
Jawad Williams, North Carolina - A graduate of Lakewood St. Ed's, he can score pass and rebound. Starting for team packed with talent, look for Williams and the Tarheels to make a strong push for the finals.
J.J. Redick, Duke - Probably the most hated player in college basketball. His shooting touch and cocky attitude have earned him many enemies. But the Blue Devils are stacked as usual, and J.J.'s shooting, 143 of 150 from the line this year, is simply redickulous.

Just to put a face with a name for those of you who don't know Teresa Reed. Did she graduate with us? I pulled this from here PhotoOhio.org
Brothel saga...what?
What if I were to mention that one of the women arrested in connection to the now infamous brothel was from Grandview? What if I were to tell you that it was someone you have met? How about if it was someone you may have sat next to in class? Could it be someone you may have made out with in the old days? What if that person's initials were T.G. ?!?! Well that would be too fucking obvious!!! You heard it first here: Teresa Reed charged at 9 a.m. Friday morning with one count soliciting, one prostitution, and drug paraphernalia. What the shit. Mission Accomplished

We tried our best to send Pat off in style. This was the scene as we hit the road in search of late night food. The snow was coming down and we overstayed our welcome at Hen Doc's. The line for Taco Bell was too long so we ended up at rally's (you gotta eat!?!). Check the photo-album for more pictures.

Friday Send Off
As you may or may not know Gorman is taking a 'Computer Security' job in Alabama and leaves tomorrow afternoon. In turn we've got a give him a proper send off... something with balloons, streamers, noise-makers, and alcohol. If things go right we'll be playing this game later tonight as we walk to taco-bell (my record is 68 meters). I nominate Hendocs as the place to go... anyone second this? The gtown photo album needs to be updated, so I'll bring my camera if everyone else leaves their inhibitions at home.

Good eye with that quote brad. That is so cooled we got props for the urinating. My sister sent me an email about the channel 4 story and I showed everyone at work. They are so impressed that I know just about as much as the cops did. Beat that!
There is a girl at work that has that family pic framed on her desk too. Maybe they are related. No, she's extra hot. never mind.
I have the buckeye article hanging outside of my desk. I like to go around saying the REAL OSU. Bow down!
We all know Ed was born to be a lawyer. Even if you answer those questions completely honestly and candidly, they will fit the profile of an excellent lawyer.
it feels so good to have the internet up and running inside. Not having the internet is like having to use an outhouse.
Are we at football season yet?

Bar Examiners...
This email came into G-town from the head Swingle on Friday 3/4/05:
In today's post was a letter from the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The National Conference of Bar Examiners prepares character and fitness reports on applicants seeking admission to the bar. The conference has been requested to prepare a report on Edward William Hastie III, who is applying for admission to the bar of Ohio.
1. How long have you known the applicant? easy.
2. Under what circumstances have you known the applicant?....... Oh... Oh.
3. From your personal knowledge, do you believe the applicant's reputation with respect to honesty,.........trustworthiness,.......diligence, and reliability to be good?
Any takers?

Buckeye Ballin'
That OSU Illinois game was f'ing nuts. For those of you who missed it, Matt Sylvester hit a 3 with 5 seconds left to put the Bucks up by one as they shocked previously undefeated, #1 Illinois. If nothing else, the game proved that OSU is the best team in the nation that will not be going to the tournament this year. Dials provides beef down-low, Foster perpetually hustles his ass off and Sylvester can shoot like a true white-boy. But the key to their team is the man behind the curtain, the man who doesn't play yet sweats more than most of the players. By beating Illinois today, Thad Motta has had consecutive seasons beating the #1 team in the nation (last year Motta's XU beat #1 St. Joe's in the A10 tournament). And because the Buckeyes have only 1 senior starter, next year should prove to be the best in a while.

Browns on the move
Looks like the browns are in the middle of a quarterback change. Now Kelly Holcomb is in Buffalo, they went a head and picked up Trent Dilfer. I'm sure his super-bowl experience will really help out the browns... are you kidding me? I did read somewhere else that the browns could be interested in Rohan Davey (Former LSU QB). Anyway, here's to still having hope for Browns' football in 2005.

Hey I just found this out... in fire fox you can select text, right-click and search for the text using google. Firefox opens up a new tab and your search results are stored there. Also Firefox has a little update icon in the top right section that will tell you when an updated version is available. Currently they're on version 1.0.1. I guess I'll just update the links to the left and make Firefox a permanent g-town institution...

http://maps.google.com
You probably already know this but google does maps now. Their results seem great... much faster than yahoo or map quest and a lot more forgiving when you start your search (there's just one field to enter data... no address, state, zip code crap). This is nice too for directions, I hate entering my starting address and having a computer tell me how to get to 71. Also you can do 'local' searches for stuff in a particular city. Doing searches on people's name returns some interesting stuff. Check it out...
